Ellsworth Dils Haynes (“EDH”) was born 28 June 1909 in Canton, Ohio. He grew up in Ohio, graduating from Denison University. He worked for a time as a crew member on a Great Lakes ore boat, for the FBI in Washington, D.C., and for Armco Steel in Havana, Cuba. He met and became engaged to EJH in NYC in 1937, but she soon thereafter broke off the engagement. He then married Helen Barr in 1938, but they divorced in 1941 after the birth of a child, Linda, in 1939. EDH attended Kansas City College of Osteopathic Medicine for a short period, but his medical studies were interrupted by WWII. He served for a time as a pharmacist’s mate on the Enewetak Atoll in the Pacific, until he was accepted for Officer’s Candidate School in 1944. On his way to OCS in Hollywood, Florida, in 1944, EDH reestablished contact with EJH, who was then working for the Royal Air Force, at Wright-Patterson Airbase in Dayton, Ohio. He proposed, she accepted, and they were married in February, 1945, in New Orleans, LA.
